The Royal Colleges

The medical Royal Colleges are independent professional
bodies governed by councils elected by the members.
Membership of the Colleges is obtained by examination
and is a virtually essential prerequisite for
hospital specialist practice in the UK National
Health Service. Some of the Colleges have been
in existence for centuries while others have been
founded more recently reflecting increasing specialisation
in medical practice.

The
Royal Colleges have a role in the quality of practice
of their speciality recognised by government.
They carry out this role by conducting their examinations,
accrediting hospital training posts and providing
some teaching and research. Doctors wishing to
become specialists in the UK must undertake a
training programme approved by the relevant college
which makes a recommendation to the Specialist
Training Authority when the programme has been
successfully completed.

Royal College examinations

These
examination are conducted regularly in the UK
and in some cases overseas. Information on the
examinations is available from the colleges. The
format and timing of the examinations varies widely
from College to College. Eligibility of doctors
to sit the examinations is decided on a case by
case basis by the relevant College.
